High Quality Teaching and Learning in Mathematics...
What School Leaders Need To Know

On March 13, 2008, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel presented their Final Report to the President of the United States and the U.S. Secretary of Education. The report stated: "Mathematics literacy is a serious problem in the United States. According to Philips (2007), 78% of adults cannot explain how to compute the interest paid on a loan, 71% cannot calculate miles per gallon on a trip, and 58% cannot calculate a 10% tip for a lunch bill."

These data paint a serious picture and present a critical challenge. Our students must be better prepared in order to understand and use the sophisticated quantitative ideas and mathematical skills that not only will allow them to manage the tasks of daily living, but also will bring them advantages in the fields of medicine and health, technology and commerce, in navigation and exploration, in defense and finance, and in the ability to understand past failures and to forecast future developments. Students need to be strengthened in this central area of learning because of the impact it will have on the prosperity and safety of our nation and the quality of life we will enjoy as its citizens.1

In order to assist principals in this effort, this principals' portal for High Quality Teaching and Learning in Mathematics...What School Leaders Need to Know was created. The resources offered through this portal include information on the new Florida Mathematics Standards, best practices in mathematics, mathematics resources for principals and teachers, and ideas for improving mathematics instruction in the classroom.
